The mobile phone, until sometime back, was determined only by the manufacturer it came from. Like one would go to a mobile store and ask for a Nokia or a Sony Ericsson. Now, it no more is the same. Things have started to mature and the thinking of the masses is moving to an all new level. Today, the consumer walks into a store and asks for a Windows Mobile Device or a Series 60 device. It s because these devices allow for much more productivity and user freedom. People have eventually realized that it is the platform that offers them that particular kind of productivity and not the manufacturer. Manufacturers also play a part because they are the ones who afterall adopt the platform.

The mobile phone is now no more just a device that can be taken casually. It has a zillion more uses now apart from basic ones like calling or sending SMS. Now, it is the device of convergence. It s convergence of entertainment and serious work. It s the device that will kill several other devices. The laptop, MP3 Players, GPS Navigation Devices, and even desktops someday; all are to be phased out just because of the mighty mobile phone. What is making this change happen? It s not just the manufacturers but also consumers who now realize that experiencing and utilizing the features present is what makes it more and more the device with the brightest future. Today, let s take a peep into how this future is shaping up and how the main players i.e. manufacturers and mobile phone OS are helping shape this bright future.

Go Hand In Hand

As I have already mentioned in my intro,  it s not just the one thing in particular but a host of them that actually contribute to the future of mobile phones. All have to go hand in hand. It all starts from the simplest of things - demand. We, as consumers, have always demanded for more as it s our nature to want more. This demand has gotten manufacturers to take steps out of the box. Some brave manufacture are taking first steps and paving the path and then the rest are following the suit. Apple was the most recent one to really change the course of the mobile phone, actually not so much change the course but to append and accelerate towards the future. The introduction of a much interactive touch interface gets the user engaged with the device in a much different fashion. I mean, come on, it s so simple that anyone can use it and explore its complete potential without necessarily taking to the manual of the device.

Going hand in hand also includes the consumers wanting to upgrade and the manufacturers willing to provide; which is the case currently. Consumers just want a better and a more functional device and manufacturers are building such devices. Such devices are being priced vaguely but I guess, it s just the greed to cash in on the situation. The moment a manufacturer realizes that even a low spender is looking for similar functionality and he drops the price of the device, he will see a much wider acceptance and this will lead to a much larger source of revenue.

All this just goes to show how things are linked. It s a cycle of evolution and even applies digitally.

We must also remember that a good OS too requires hardware to back it up. The Apple OS without a phone with multi-touch capabilities would not be the same.

right, good hardware is necessity, but what we see and do on mobile is directly the interface of operating system. it defines the usability and handling. OS makes it simpler, and sometimes difficult to operate the device. for an example take XP (easy and fast) and Vista(slow and complicated). this also applies to mobiles.
