Much cheaper than Nokia's current cheapest Symbian smartphone
Just after making its platform open source, The Symbian Foundation has announced that it is planning to unveil a handful of cheap, Symbian smartphones by the end of 2010. This was revealed by none other than the Executive Director of Symbian Foundation, Lee Williams. These handsets, scheduled to arrive by the end of this year, will be priced around the $140 (Rs. 6,500) mark. While we do not have an inkling as to what features these will come with, there is no doubt that these will run Symbian^3. Also, what is not sure is if Nokia will be making these phones. As you might be aware, there are quite a few others including Samsung and Sony Ericsson who have their feet dipped in Symbian water - so it could be any one of them as well!
In addition to these, it is pertinent to note that the current cheapest Symbian smartphone from Nokia is the Nokia 5233 that retails for just over $170 (Rs. 7,850) in India.
Reaching the $140 milestone would be a great achievement and will allow a broader section of the consumers to use smartphones - a tag currently associated only with "expensive" phones.
