Wikimedia is behind popular sites like Wikipedia, Wiktionary and Wikimedia Commons
Google, in what seems to be an act of benevolence has donated a sum of $2 million to the Wikimedia Foundation. The foundation, as you might be aware is the group behind Wikipedia, the world s largest online encyclopedia and reference website.
The revelation of the donation was made by Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia now a board member of the Wikimedia foundation in a tweet yesterday. The formal announcement is expected to happen today.
Apart from Wikpedia, the Wikimedia foundation houses projects like Wikibooks, a book repository, Wiktionary, an online dictionary and the Wikimedia Commons - a repository of images, videos and files. It also pertinent to note that Google search results usually have a Wikipedia link right at the top of the page making it one of the most visible links that are accessed from Google
