The Apple iPad might be the hottest thing out there in the small world of Internet Tablets currently. However, there seems to be a group of dedicated Indians who would be looking to steal the thunder from the giants at Cupertino by introducing their own tablet that at least going by the specs, can make any possible iPad user think before investing dough on the latter.
We're talking about the NotionInk Adam, a tablet that has been the result of a collaboration between six IITians and an MBA graduate. The Notion Ink had been showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show 2010 and will be seen again at the upcoming Mobile World Congress where we might see some news regarding its availability.
The Android based tablet boasts of a frugal nVidia Tegra processor and a PixelQi screen, both of which ensures that it beats the battery life of the Apple iPad be a nice margin. Also, the Tegra chip is faster and is capable of handling full HD (1080p) content as well - unlike the Apple iPad which does only 576p/480p. There will be two versions of the Adam - and for a change, the difference is not in the screen sizes. It's about the thickness. One will be a 12.9mm version while the "smaller" one will be 11.6mm thi(n)ck. It also faces a front camera apparently that can be used for video chats and webinars. The Adam will also offer full flash support - a thing the iPad cannot do. These new information came to light when folks over at Slashgear had a tete-a-tete with NotionInk CEO Rohan Shravan.
The only chink in the armor would be the lack of a comprehensive application store on the lines of the Apple App Store, which the iPad user will have access to. That said, with this being Android, we were wondering if the Android Market has some significance here. Notion Ink folks too are fully aware that the Adam would need an enthusiastic developer community that needs to back the Adam with quality apps. Which is why they are planning a developer challenge that will have a $1 million prize money for the winner. Now, that is bound to attract some attention!
We will be hearing more about the Notion Ink in the days to come at the Mobile World Congress.
@pratyush: this piece of gold is based on the 2.2 Android where the developers have converted it into a 2.3 or some sort.. which means only the source codes are adnroids,, the rest thing is completely diffrent, so v less chances of Android market of use..Mr.Shravan has also said he would create his own app store and decide which apps for free and which for a price...
If this has Android OS then there shouldn't be any issues about the availability of applications for this. Or am i getting it wrong?? Since in the article its mentioned that Adam is android based and on the other hand they are saying that availability of applications can be and issue. Please clarify.
just make sure you have good apps in the 'evolving' appstore and a good onscreen keyboard ... to start with [along with all the known goodies]. thats should put adam ahead of ipad or anything else.
I have been following the Adam as it has evolved and any one interested should check out the articles on slashgear as they have been my primary source of information along with NotionInk CEO Rohan Shravan's blog. I am totally blown away and totally believe that this is not vaporware but the real deal. The future is here.
Great to see competition in this market. Unlike smart phones which was left to Apple for almost 2 years without competition (I had to endure Win Mobile from Verizon---)
If this device could come out at a price point similar to the iPad, it would probably be a winner. It already has Android recognition baked in, and it could be physically rebranded to give customers a local brandname to identify with.
It seems to do more than Apple's product, has somewhat less lock in, and hopefully will also offer things like an SD card reader.

it's a good start.always you have to start and then stumble upon.then only you figure out how to overcome obstacles.let the market see the first product.best luck folks.
wow. atleast a product made me say wow ..unlike ipad which made me say are you effin kidding me...I already have a mini version that is restricted, why would I buy i big ipod when I got a iphone.
Well, this is not a review by any measure. It is obvious that specs wise, the Adam trumps the iPad. No one is claiming that the overall experience would be better than or worse than the iPad.
