There has always been some sort of competition and rivalry between PC
and console gamers and games. But there are quite a few multiplatform
games, which are available on the PC as well as console. Many of these
are designed with the console in mind, and then simply ported to PC.
While some do well, many other don't. Here are a few games that did not
do so well on the PC as they did on the console versions.
Gears of War
The
sci-fi shooter Gears of War was a mega success on the Xbox 360. Epic
Games therefore hoped that a PC version would be just as successful, if
not more. Even though the original console game was marketed as an Xbox
360 exclusive title, it was eventually released for Windows with
enhanced graphics, and running at a higher resolution. The use of mouse
and keyboard greatly enhanced the aiming capabilities and the gaming
experience. It also featured new multiplayer maps and modes along with
a new mini single player campaign. However, the sales figures of the PC
version never got anywhere close to that of the console version.
In
a video interview with MundoRare, Epic president Mike Capps states, "I
think its bullshit. What we did was take a great game, Gears of War 1
for Xbox 360, made it run at higher resolutions and added three new
hours of really good gameplay and it got lower reviews. I think that's
bullshit, and I don't understand it. I can't figure out what it is."
One
of the reasons given for the game not doing as well as expected was
Microsoft's Games for Windows Live, which forced people to pay for
certain multiplayer features during the few months after the release
(note that Games for Windows Live is completely free now). The other
probable reason could be that many gamers had already bought the
original version and would not have felt like buying it one more time,
thus underscoring the fact that the PC port was in fact a technically
excellent version. Epic has since said that they do not plan to bring a
PC port of Gears of War 2, which is probably due to their bad
experiences with the earlier version.
