Nokia has finally decided to take on the likes of the Samsung Corby and the LG Cookie -- both of which have taken the mid-range touchscreen market by storm since late 2008. The company has launched its own touchscreen handset, the Nokia 5233, which is targeted at this segment.
The 5233 is arguably the cheapest Nokia touchscreen device that you can buy in India today. The phone, priced at just Rs. 7,850 also makes it one of the cheapest smartphones you can buy today. Unlike the Corby or the Cookie, which uses proprietary operating systems, the 5233 is a full fledged smartphone running S60 Version 5. What you get for the money is the 2 megapixel camera, a 3.2-inch display, support for GPRS and EDGE, Bluetooth and Ovi Maps. The 70 MB internal dynamic memory is expandable memory up to 16GB with microSD cards. It also has a 3.5 mm audio jack. It also supports video recording at up to 640x480 pixels and up to 30 fps - which is phenomenal for a phone priced at just about Rs. 8,000.
The only thing you would miss would be support for 3G and Wi-Fi support. That is not much of a loss for the price you get this phone. The device also has a talk time of 7 hours and is available in Black and Red colors across India.
