Windows Mobile 7, the next in line mobile OS from Microsoft, is likely to be revealed next week at the MWC in Barcelona. When released, it would replace Windows Mobile 6.5 as the mainstream mobile OS from Microsoft. From what little we knew about it, it can be assumed that the OS will be a completely new one, built from the scratch and will be quite unlike outgoing Windows Mobile versions.
Folks over at PPCGeeks claim to have discovered a few vital pieces of information regarding the upcoming OS, just prior to the MWC.
These additional details include juicy bits like:
- No support for custom UIs (No TouchFLO!, SENSE) - Full Integration with Zune and Xbox - New API for marketplace - Apps only downloadable via marketplace And lastly, - No support for multitasking!
Now, we hope at least the last bit doesn't prove to be true. Whatever the reasons Microsoft may give for discarding multitasking support, it would always be considered regressive. Also, in case the UI doesn't match up to that of the iPhone, then Microsoft would be left with no competitive advantage over it as well. Besides, there's the open source Android (and now Symbian as well) which can multitask with its eyes closed. If that wasn't all, the upcoming iPhone OS 4.0 is likely to support full fledged multitasking and in the end, Microsoft would be left with the most outdated OS on the planet.
While we understand that Microsoft might have its own reasons for choosing not to "induce" multitasking support, the company will lose an entire section of consumers who might be using Windows Mobile right now just because it multitasks. We have our fingers crossed.
It is only for Zune phone AKA Windows Mobile 7 Media Edition. I think, for media edition, it is very important to ensure that the battery life. So, they are imposing the constraints. Integration of Xbox sounds great.
Windows Mobile 7 Business Edition will support multi tasking and all other business feature. Many things have not revealed yet. Will it share code base of Windows 7, Portability between the two edition, etc....
