Please, Sony Ericsson -- get the point!

A step in the right direction

Sony Ericsson today unveiled the Aspen -- a QWERTY candy-bar phone that sport Microsoft's latest Windows Mobile 6.5.3 OS. We're hoping that it will fiercely compete to QWERTY moguls of today like the Nokia E71/E72 or be a better alternative to the Samsung Omnia Pro B7320. It looks quite elegant and should appeal to business professionals.

But moreover, there's one big welcome change -- Finally! Have a look for yourself:

Still didn't get it? The nasty Sony Ericsson proprietary Fast Port is gone! It's replaced with what seems to be a microUSB port. The Fast Port was undeniably a flawed piece of junk. And it used to show its ugly face in every Sony Ericsson phone out there (except Windows Mobile based XPERIA X1).

I and many others I personally know will testify to the claim that after a few months of use, the Fast Port would start acting up -- causing a loose connection hell that would suddenly disconnect your headset when you put your phone in the pocket, or even stop charging the phone if it was moved a little. Secondly, SE simply refused to put a 3.5mm headphone jack even in their high-end Walkman music phones and rather relied on the Fast Port. My colleague lamented about the same issue a while back.

That's a good first step SE! Now just stick to the 3.5mm jack/microUSB port combination in non-Windows Mobile phone too! Let's hope this is the last we'll see of the Fast Port. I salute thee good bye - with a finger that's placed between my ring and index one!

God, this is really a good news! I hate Fast Port on my SE! When they add 3.5mm jack, that would be perfect in combination with Micro USB port.

In Sony's site I have seen from the specs that it sports a 16M color TFT as opposed to 65K color limitation of windows mobile OS which failed to use the display's quality in Samsung Omnia HD and Xperia series. Also as per the CPU and other harware of Xperia 2 are quite outdated. Sony has a good chance of making this a marvel if they make it after the launch of Windows Mobile7 at Word Mobile Even this month. But the company is making a shift to symbian and Android OS as well, there pieces Vivaz and Robin if it may that would be launched by Q3. Sony has incurred a lot of losses with past models. If they try to be a croby pro they have got my vote for sure.

Had to sell the prev SE-s I'd owned becoz of the FastPort... Ruins an otherwise good experience... Nokia wised up when they flushed their POP port down the shitbowl. If SE's doin the same- good. It's ABOUT TIME!

What you said is absolutely right. I'm also tired of this loose connection in my SE K700i phone. Lets hope they will replace this with 3.5mm jack in the future.

You have missed out that this phone uses microSD card not their proprietary M2 card

Yes, that's true...but that transition had started a while back with their Sony Ericsson K850i. But yes, standardizing to microSD is a good thing too.

I am surprised that Sony-Ericsson is continuing to release Windows Mobile phones, when the Android platform is the fastest growing in the industry. Sony-Ericsson's Xperia X2 (with Windows Mobile) has failed in the market. They're having trouble finding carriers that will take it. On the other hand, Sony Ericsson's first Android phone, the Xperia X10, looks very promising, and I think it will be a success.

Agree it would also bring down the cost of the phone (no paying royalty to uncle Gates) & be more competitive.
