Chrome Eating into Firefox, IE Market Share?

The browser's market share is increasing steadily

According to the latest data released by Internet research firm Netmarketshare, Google's Chrome browser is on a steady market share increasing spree. The browser, which was launched in late 2008, has overtaken the likes of Opera and Safari to become the third most popular browser on the planet.

While Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer are ahead of Chrome by a considerable margin, the worrying thing for both of them is that they have lost market share at the cost of Chrome's gain. Apple's Safari browser too has increased its share. In terms of numbers, Internet Explorer with all its versions accounts for 62.2 percent while Mozilla Firefox trails at second place with 24.4 percent share. Chrome is at distant third place at 5.2 percent of the browser market. This is up from 4.6 percent share it had at the end of December. Apple's Safari browser, mostly only used on Macs, has a 4.52 percent market share. This too has been rising since the past few months - probably because of the ever increasing sales of Macs. We doubt if many users are even aware of Safari's Windows versions' existence!

With the latest version of Chrome bringing in support for add-ons like Firefox, looks like Mozilla has some nice competition and Chrome's popularity should even surge further.

I've been using Chrome since Beta testing.. and prior to that I was a Firefox junky. But I have to say... I think now that Chrome offers full customization and addons like Firefox... there's nothing that Firefox can do that Chrome can't.. thus I think Firefox are going to have to think outside the box to hold onto their marketshare. I say kudos to Google... and I agree with srinath... fastest smoothest browser I've used.

Increase in MS of Chrome is not surprising. People need simpler UI and light browser. Latest versions of IE are bulky and takes up lots of memory when many windows are open. I personally use Firefox and I am really satisfied with customization it offers. Let's hope chrome coming out with add ons!
