Bluetooth, as most of you might be aware, has become an integral feature on most self respecting mobile phones of today.

The technology however has been stagnant for quite a while now. The last time Bluetooth received a major update was back in 2007 when Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR arrived on mobile devices. That changed in April 2009, when the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) announced the arrival of the latest Bluetooth standard, Bluetooth 3.0 + HS - the fastest and the latest Bluetooth specification around. Of course there is Bluetooth 4.0 around as well, but that will only be seen in low power devices.

All through 2009, mobile devices continued to ship with "old" Bluetooth 2.0 and 2.1 hardware and only in 2010 will we see the first of the devices that will come with Bluetooth 3.0 loaded. The first of these devices might be the Samsung GT-S8500, a phone that would be launched later this year. The Bluetooth SIG'S website has details of this phone that will most likely be the first one to sport Bluetooth 3.0. The S8500 is a Full Touchscreen device boasting of a 3.1 inch OLED screen and runs the Touchwiz interface over proprietary Samsung OS we believe. The phone is also told to be slim and will support EDGE/GPRS Quad-Band (850/900/1800/1900) networks.

The major advantage of Bluetooth 3.0 over the outgoing version is the much faster data transfer speeds (24Mbps as compared to 3Mbps). Bluetooth 3.0 uses 802.11 as high-speed transport. Let's hope early prototypes of the S8500 shows itself up at the upcoming Mobile World Congress.
