After having reviewed three variants of the HD Media Player from WD, it's now time to focus on similar players from other manufacturers. We have for review Asus' O! Play Air with us today. Asus internationally has a standard media player without the Wi-Fi support better known as the O! Play. It is similar to what we've seen from WD in the WD TV HD & the WD TV Live. For now it is just the O! Play Air that seems to have made it to the Indian shores, and I don't think it'll be long before Asus launches the standard model.

Anyway, since we have a new player in the market let's see how it fares against the competition.

I should have heeded your remark about their service.I purchased ASUS O!PLAY AIR HDP-R3 on 6 Sep 2010. I cannot access anything through Wi-Fi including my PC as well as on line media. There is no shortcut or software in the player for online media. I telephone Rashi Perpherals, Vashi, 0250-3246041. I was directed to contact Asus on 1800-2090-365. Asus services noted my complaint and promised to telephone back in 15 minutes. After four attemps, I finally, got through to a Mr. Kiran at Asus. He directed me to download and install new firmware. I installed the new firmware but still got no Wi-Fi connection. I went to a friend’s home and tried connecting through his Linksys router. My Iphone connected but Asus did not. I telephoned Mr. Kiran again and he said he will sms the Delhi address of his service centre. There was no response for several hours. I telephoned him again on Thursday 9 September 2010 and this time I was asked to contact: Mr. Chandra Prakash, tel.: 46609900 or 46609999 at Rashi, 312A/314, Mansarovar, 90, Nehru Place, New Delhi. They said Mr. Prakash is on leave and there was nobody else to help me out. On Friday 10 Sept., they again have no person to examine the device. I have been told to contact again on Monday 13th.

This does support MKV. I prefer to read the specifications before commenting. I tried it out with a 1080p Sanyo projector, 8 feet in length screen, Marantz high end receiver, Mardaunt-Short speakers. The picture quality was stunning. The sound is definitely 5.1 - anybody saying it is not is absolutely wrong. You need to use the SPDIF(optical) out or HDMI. If you are not using any of these two and still expect 5.1 - sorry, it does not seem like a fair expectation from such a low priced product. I have not tested all the video/audio formats. My aim was to test it with MKV and AVI files and it worked great. It does not do a great work in upscaling videos. You need to tell it not to upscale and use a good quality receiver to upscale the video - I think most of us understand that you don't get good upscalers at this price. So, get something with a Faroudja processor if you want the best upscaling.

Do not trust Asus and Rashi Peripherals. They are cheats. Just visit a service centre. At any time you see no. or complaints came there.

I Agree, after sale support from Asus and Rashi Peripherals is worst. Beware of buying Asus products or anthing that is supported by Rashi Peripherals in Chennai

Do remember that its job is to play videos, and it only has composite out, which is quite crappy. This thing is useless without component out. How come the reviewer missed this?
