George Hotz has finally managed to hack Sony's PlayStation 3 gaming console successfully. Yes, Hotz is the same guy who was first to hack iPhone and released Blackra1n tool for jailbreaking iPhone and iPod Touch devices. Sony's PlayStation 3 has been here for over three years and Hotz claimed that it took him less than five weeks to hack it.

A week back, Hotz claimed to have hacked the PS3 console which would run pirated games or open source software. Not to forgot, many are already running different Linux flavors on their PS 3 console. Now, Hotz has released the PS3 exploit to the community for further investigation.

George Hotz, in his blog, noted:

This is the coveted PS3 exploit, gives full memory access and therefore ring 0 access from OtherOS. Enjoy your hypervisor dumps. This is known to work with version 2.4.2 only, but I imagine it works on all current versions.

Hotz also clarified that unlike iPhone, he isn't hacking the console for promoting piracy. He claims that it's meant only for "research purposes" (yeah, right!). Basically, what Hotz has opened is a window to peep inside the deep dark secured area of low-level codes. In his latest post, he revealed the details of this exploit and also the code of the exploit for others to test it out.

Although Hotz has admitted that he wasn't able to hack the entire console but he did manage to drill a hole in the secured wall of PS3 codes. In way, we can foresee that the console would either be hackable and mod-able like Xbox 360. This may spur piracy unless Sony, who's 'investigating' the report, smartly releases some "update" that patches the security hole.
