Build & Design
The Altec Lansing MIX is quite an attractive looking iPod Dock. The design of the dock will grow onto you and you will like it more every time. The dock features an industrial look with edgy design features. It shouts aggressive with the use of metal grills/screws and plastic handle bars that are striking and stand out. At the same time the dock has been completed in a matt finish, which gives it a sober look. The use of little sand gold plastics gives it a nice look.
The face of the dock has a classic audio cassette player design. The face is such that it leans backwards towards the speakers. The slight angle not only makes the music reach ear-level but also makes it easy to read and see the iPod when standing. What makes it feel classic are the speakers placed on either side of the console; here the center console being the docking station for the iPods. Between the speaker and the center console there is a partition that creates an illusion that it's a three-piece system. The speakers include three-inch drivers which are protected by metal grills and above them each is a tweeter, sunk within the body. The grills are defined by a sand gold ring and so are the tweeters with a sand gold ring and cone cap. 
At either end of the dock are protruding handles. These help carry the dock around with absolute ease. The weight of the dock isn't much all by itself but with 8 D batteries packed in, it gets a little more heavy.
The center console has been well designed. You have the docking station and you have adaptors for all types of iPod/iPhones. There is a safety bar which slides up and down and holds on at any point you leave it. The bar has cushioning on the inside to prevent any scratches on your iPod and the bar makes sure your iPod doesn't fall off. Above the docking station is the display of the dock. It's a rather small display with two lines and displays necessary info for operations. The display has a nice contrast and is easily readable. The backlighting is amber, which is soothing to look at. 
Coming to the top of the dock there is a handle placed right in the center, and behind it is the housing of the clip-on remote. There are also two AUX ports provided and because of the handle the space provided for grip has been designed to place tall devices in a standing position. The image below will give you a good idea of what it looks like. Closer to the front facing edge are the controls of the dock. There are two buttons on either side, while the center is a volume dial that also acts as a Standby ON/OFF switch. The two buttons on the left include Source and EQ while the ones on the right include Previous and Next. These buttons have combinations to reach to various functionalities like Custom Equalizer Settings, EQ Presets, Resetting the dock etc.
