The news of the delayed launch of Windows Mobile 7 had just come in a few days ago, following reports that an intermediate version of Windows Mobile 6.6 might see the light of the day first, at the upcoming Mobile World Congress .

That said, fresh rumours are coming in regarding the handsets that are scheduled to arrive in 2011 with Windows Mobile 7. There is also, a rumour about Windows Mobile 7 coming in two flavours. According to folks at WM Experts, Microsoft plans to launch two versions of Windows Mobile 7, reportedly called Windows Phone Seven Business Edition (BE) and Windows Phone Seven Media Edition (ME).

The Business edition, as it is named, will obviously be targeted at the business user and would be OEM friendly by being easily customizable. It will feature advanced syncing capabilities and will provide multiple user access.

The Media Edition will be where all the technological breakthroughs and a probable UI change will go in. It is likely to feature  HD video, Zune integration, TV streaming and support for Silverlight, Mediaroom, XBox Live, and social networking sites . There is also a cloud based A-GPS system that is undergoing tests. Aimed at speeding up GPS performance, the system, called Orion, too will see its presence in Windows Mobile 7.

Now for the handsets. Windows Mobile 7 will no doubt be a demanding OS and the phones that will run it is expected to feature high-end hardware. We already have an inkling as to what to expect from these phones.

Two phones that have already been rumoured are the LG Apollo and the HTC Obsession. The former is expected to be announced later this year and might just turn out to be the first Windows Mobile 7 based phone.

Its likely specs:

  • 3.8-inch capacitive AMOLED multitouch display with WXGA resolution (1280 x 720 pixels)
  • CDMA / EV-DO and GSM / HSDPA connectivity
  • Wi-Fi
  • Qualcomm CPU at 1.3GHz
  • 1GB of RAM, 1GB of ROM
  • 10MP autofocus camera with flash and HD 720p video recording
  • 115 x 57.5 x 11.2
As for the HTC Obsession, this will be a scaled down HTC HD2 and is likely to feature the SENSE UI. It is likely to feature:
  • 3.7 inch capacitive AMOLED multitouch display
  • HSDPA
  • Wi-Fi
  • 5MP autofocus camera with flash and HD video recording
  • Qualcomm CPU at 1GHz
  • 512MB RAM, 512MB ROM
  • 4GB of internal memory

Let's hope Microsoft reveals a bit more on the two editions of Windows Mobile 7 at the MWC, which is just a few weeks from now.

Making all the WM7 software incompatible with today's WM6.5 phones will be interesting. Wait until word of that gets around. All those software houses who bet on Windows Mobile, will now have to do some rewriting of their apps to make them work. On the other hand, if they have to rewrite, they may as well rewrite to Android, and get the rapidly expanding Android user base. Existing stocks of Windows Mobile phones are going to be impossible to sell. The platform will be discontinued sometime in the coming months. Who would want a Windows Mobile phone now, knowing it has no future?
