If you have still not been alerted by our earlier story on the 2010 Annular solar eclipse, here we go again.
Today is the day you will witness the longest solar eclipse of this century take place. The annular solar eclipse would be visible in most parts of India but only the southern fringes of the country will see it as an Annular eclipse. For the rest of the country, it would be a partial solar eclipse.
The best places to see the eclipse in its annular from would be Dhanuskodi town near Rameshwaram. If you are already there, wait for the show to begin! The eclipse will last for over 10 minutes in mainland India and can go up to a maximum of 11 minutes 8 seconds in parts of the Indian ocean thus making it the longest solar eclipse of this century. The eclipse starts a at 10:44 am IST and will end at 2:29 PM (IST). This is not the total duration of the eclipse but the range of time different places would see the eclipse happen.
Also, it has been reported that The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will launch a series of rockets from its two centres to study this solar eclipse and its repercussions. These were supposed to be sent out from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh and Thumba in Kerala.
Annular solar eclipses occur when the Moon is too far to cover the Sun entirely. Therefore, when the eclipse reaches totality, you would see a ring (Annulus) around the moon and hence the name annular.
Please do exercise caution while watching this eclipse. DO NOT look directly at the Sun during the eclipse for it might put your eyes at risk even with your cool sunglasses. Also, do not try to use binoculars or telescopes and point at the eclipse directly without sufficient protection as you run the risk of being blinded.
Here are a few live feeds of the solar eclipse:
As with every major incidents, the 2010 solar eclipse seems to be slowly becoming a much talked about topic on Twitter. As of now, it hasn't started trending. That might happen once the eclipse reaches more countries. That said, people from various countries have already posted pictures of the eclipse.

In Hindu mythology, Rahu is a snake that swallows the sun or the moon causing eclipses. He is depicted in art as a dragon with no body riding a chariot drawn by eight black horses. Rahu is one of the navagrahas (nine planets) in Vedic astrology. The Rahu kala is considered inauspicious.
According to legend, during the Samudra manthan, the asura Rahu drank some of the divine nectar. But before the nectar could pass his throat, Mohini (the female avatar of Vishnu) cut off his head. The head, however, remained immortal. It is believed that this immortal head occasionally swallows the sun or the moon, causing eclipses. Then, the sun or moon passes through the opening at the neck, ending the eclipse. thats why it is inauspicious to look at da sun/moon during an eclipse?

Wow today for the first time in my life i could see the eclipse. Its so beautiful. After I saw the eclipse thru the sun glasses, for so long the image was in my eyes. I could see the clear concave moon, the sun and one good star. Wow good that I experienced this.
It is not recommended to eat during the duration of the eclipse because certain harmful rays are emitted during this time. The digestion of the food taken becomes slow and sometimes the food consumed may turn rotten. It is adivisable to take food atleast 2 hrs before the onset of the eclipse to enable completion digestion.
M XTREMELY HAPPY N lucky to see this view...........dat too on my birthday
super wish i could be there at my hometown, rameshwaram.....
but this is very beautiful
It is just fantastic viewing to know that another will occur only after a 1000 years we are lucky enough to witness this rare celestial event I watched thru a special glasses provided by the TN SCIENCE organisation
Though we are so advanced scientifically, they are few things which go beyond explaination...Avoid eating any food or drink..Have a fresh bath & visit a nearby temple.
Dring the time of Eclipse, one should do the devotional activities to Lrod Sri Krishna. And one should not eat the food cooked before or during the eclipse after eclipse.

Let it come its own way! Its noting good and nothing bad for us. Its a natural incident that occours and we are the luckies one to witness the happening.
I really liked this article. And hope all will like to read it and gather information about this natural phenomenon. This is a great day for the Hindu religion as it occured on the 'Makar Sakranti' the day of good omen for all the hindus.
I have watched with my eyes not well protected and i feel some bit of pain in them.I 've only realised that the ultra violet rays from the sun release an abnormal light but the annulas is not visible.
You actually can safely look at a total solar eclipse while the sun is _totally_ blocked by the moon. It looks like the moon has a fiery white aura, and it is one of the more spectacular things I have ever seen.
So why do people say it's dangerous to look at a solar eclipse? Well, in general (during non-eclipse times), you've probably been told not to stare at the sun. This is because the sun simply outputs more power than our eye is designed to handle, and exposing our eye to that kind of power can damage the retina. And in a nutshell, solar eclipses are dangerous because the sun can come out from behind the moon and "surprise you" before you have a chance to look away. And this is actually even worse than when you normally look away from the sun because during the total eclipse, it is dark out, and your pupil therefore dialates so that it can let in enough light to get a good picture. Then, when the sun reappears and starts flooding the area with really bright light, not only are you staring straight at it, but your eye is in a state where it is wide open, and actively trying to let in as much light as possible.
This explains why it is easy to damage your eye when watching a total solar eclipse, and why you should either be sure to time it very carefully (and allow for a good margin of error), or just view the thing through one of those sets of cheap "dark" glasses they sell for the express purpose of looking at the sun without getting hurt.

Well thanks a lot for such forensic timely analysis, now that is a good update to some of the world's superstitious cultures that associate eclipse with bad omens.
Right Now from Nairobi. Its very cold, though we are experiencing some Cloud cover. But is has been going through Partial, and almost total. Everybody is excited as people are busy watching and those with good protection are enjoying the show case. Nyariki DG & L.Mashine (My Wife) Saw It! Hooray!
