Google Nexus One's First Week Sales Weak

Has been termed a "superphone" by folks over at Google

The Googlephone, Google's very own Nexus One, has been termed a "superphone" by folks over at Google themselves. Everything might be super about the Nexus One except for the part that it hasn't actually managed to set the sales graphs on fire following its much subdued launch just over a week ago.

While Google did try to create a momentum of sorts and interest in the then mysterious Googlephone, they seem to have lost track somewhere in the middle which has inevitably resulted in these not so impressive sales figure for the phone. The data provided by analytics firm Flurry estimate that in the first week of its existence, only over 20,000 Nexus Ones were sold! Even the beleaguered Motorola managed to do better with its Droid with over 250,000 units selling in the very first week. Of course, all these figures mean nothing if we do not compare them with the sales figure (first week of course) of the iPhone which sold a staggering 1.6 million units just on week one.

Now, what we do not know is whether this is some strange strategy from Google where they would be looking at Android in the "long term" and are not as of now worried about the sales figures. Or maybe, Google just didn't do enough to promote the Nexus One? True, the Nexus One was a trending topic on Twitter for weeks. However, the huge interest in the phone that was visible online did not seem to have converted in to sales figures for Google.

Less the better. You can find iPhone everywhere... its ridiculously annoying & taste-less. iPhone 3G [s] is success because of iPod's early dominance which lead to iPhone's early success. NEXUS ONE is doing it by itself. These days EVERYBODY has an iPhone (3G or not- who cares?) and real phone users use the good ones- not iPhone. They want the apps- not the phone. Duh.

Sigh. Some iPhone bashers can be so simple minded. Great command of the English language, btw.

I think that also the on-line-only policy has to be considered... Apple was retailing the iPhone in real stores where fan boys could camp, curious could touch the real thing and passer-by could accidentally... well, pass by. All in all, perhaps it was wise: if the sales figure had been much higher, so would have been the pressure on the not-really-state-of-the-art service, wouldn't it? My personal opinion is that the main interest of Google with this phone is not selling units, nor take on the iPhone personally, their goal might have been to re-establish a reference point for a platform in danger of over-fragmentation... basically they had to say "wanna put android in a microwave oven (somebody DID!)? Suit yourself but THIS (the Nexus One) is the "standard" android device that the developers should refer to"... this would also explain the lack of any real hardware breakthrough, they want to promote the platform, no interest in potential Nexus-exclusive features.

What is interesting is that google pretty much owns the online ad space so their ads for the phone are everywhere. They need a fancy tv ad to promote it better. I think people just don't know much about the phone. Alot of people that want one are probably already locked into a AT&T contracts like myself. If it is good it will have staying power and when contracts expire it will pick up new subscribers.

I have not seen many advertisements for it. I iPhone and Droid get tons of ads, but I barely see any for Nexus One except banners and such online. In fact, there is one right next to this text box (while a Blackberry commercial is playing on TV). Because I'm a tech sort of guy, I will most likely purchase the Nexus One when I can afford it, and when it's been around long enough for whatever issues to be cleared up.
