Time for the first Techtree weekly round-up of the year! The tech week began on a high this year with two major events happening almost simultaneously. First Google announced its much awaited Nexus One followed by the beginning of CES at Las Vegas. Let's now take a look at what kept us busy over the past week!

Gods Own Country Goes 3G

The much sought after 3G mobile services have finally arrived for the people of Kerala with BSNL formally launching the service in the northern city of Kozhikode.  The service will soon encompass all the 14 district headquarters of the state by the end of January. Apart from these locations, seven more major towns would be 3G equipped by the end of the month.

Apple iSlate Purported Specs Surface Online

Whilst we assumed that there were enough of Apple iSlate speculations, along came the images of Apple iSlate technical specifications. An anonymous tipster tipped Phone Arena with documents of 7.1-inch Apple iSlate tablet which will feature Mac OS X 10.7 Cloud Leopard. Looking too good to be real, the specifications of the Apple iSlate will surely bring many on their toes. Sadly, the product launch is set on January 26 (which is still a couple of weeks away), and the tablet will go for sale in March.

Nokia seems to be very optimistic about what 2010 has in store for it. Nokia's phone unit chief Rick Simonson has told Reuters that his company expects to ship over 500 million units across three platforms in 2010. That sure looks like a very good figure and if you do the math, it almost adds upto 40 percent of all handsets to be sold in the world in 2010. This figure is way off the "conservative" 458 million handsets estimate that independent market research agencies point out.

Winmo 6.5 Upgrade Leaked for HTC Ozone

The Americanized CDMA version of the HTC Snap, known as the HTC Ozone, will be getting an official Windows Mobile 6.5 update say the birdies over at XDA-Developers.  The HTC Snap is currently available for Verizon subscribers in U.S. and was launched just weeks before Windows Mobile 6.5 was officially launched. However, it is only now, almost three months after the arrival of Windows Mobile 6.5, that Verizon is officially planning to update the phone to this version. The update is, in fact, almost ready to be rolled out but Verizon is yet to do so for reasons best known to it. XDA-Developers also has a copy of the update for users who can t wait for Verizon to bestow its kindness upon them and would like to update its phones all by themselves. That, however, is a risky path.

Google's Chrome, now well into its second year of operations, has pipped Apple's Safari browser (based on the same engine, interestingly) to become the third most used browser on the planet after Mozilla's Firefox and Internet Explorer. The surge in Chrome's market share comes at a time when the first stable Mac version of the browser was unveiled and released for Mac users last month. The current data, made available by web metrics provider Net Applications, states that Chrome now boasts of a 4.63 percent market share as opposed to the 4.46 percent that Safari boasts of.

Google-HTC Prepping Chrome OS Tablet

After the famous Google Android OS based first mobile phone from HTC, the Google-HTC team is now rumored for working on Chrome OS Tablet, as Smart House reported. According to "sources", HTC has been working with Google since past 18 months and several working versions of the Tablet have been developed. Recently, this duo launched the Nexus One smartphone. The Google-HTC collaboration has given has many Android based smartphones and now, the pair is rumored for working a Tablet. Basically, these rumors again duel with Apple's iSlate Tablet (yeah, right, even we're tired of writing about it) and compete with it. Alright, this is funny as the report talks about two unconfirmed products competing with each other. No evidence except "sources" information prove that either of the products really exist.

So, the much sought after "GooglePhone", the Nexus One has been officially unveiled by Google (in chagrin with HTC) at its much talked about Android Press Event earlier today. The  phone, termed by Google as a "superphone" has the looks, the specs and the backing to take on the mighty iPhone. The specs which are the same as we had posted in our earlier stories about this device does make the phone a powerful computing device -- all neatly bundled in a 11.9mm, 130gram package. The Nexus One is now officially available in the US and will soon be available in "most countries" across the globe. Officially, it is not here in India though as yet.
