    Acer 5738DG 3D Notebook [Review]

    Roydon Cerejo, Jan 08, 2010 1701 hrs IST

    3D finally hits notebooks and Acer gives us the first taste

    3D ready, priced well, good multimedia performance, very comfortable keyboard

    Trackpad positioning could have been better, a bit heavy, no Express card slot, ATI 4570 is too weak to enjoy 3D gaming

3D gaming and movies seems to be the next logical step when it comes to video entertainment. Full HD displays are already mainstream now and the next big feature in high end displays is going to be 3D. From Anaglyph 3D to Stereoscopic 3D, we've come a long way since the days of the red and blue glasses. We've all seen Nvidia's GeForce 3DVision in action, which worked very well but required some very expensive equipment. For instance, the 3D glasses alone cost 10K not to mention you had to invest in a 120Hz monitor, which till today is hard to find and pricey. So how do you manage to provide the 3D experience and cut costs at the same time? This is where TriDef 3D comes into the picture.

The Acer 5738DG is the first commercially available 3D notebook to arrive in India. What Acer has done is implement the technology created by DDD (Dynamic Digital Depth) called TriDef into their notebook. This includes a special polarized 3D screen that works with passive polarized glasses to give you the Stereoscopic 3D effect. Some of the major advantages of using this technology over active shutter glasses are;

  • 3D glasses need not be powered making them cheaper to produce
  • Screen need not have 120Hz refresh rate, again reducing the cost
  • Works with ATI and Nvidia graphics cards
  • Overall cheaper to implement
  • Works on Win XP as well
There is one flaw though, progressive output is not possible, which means horizontal lines will be visible during movies or games or even your photos. When you use active shutter glasses, the screen dishes out 60 frames per eye that's why the end result appears crisp and clear. In TriDef 3D, there are two polarized films in the LCD panel and the glasses you wear doesn't have the active shutter but instead they are tinted with a pre-defined colour, so that the eye sees only the colour defined for it and not the other.
Now that we have a better understanding of how Acer has implemented this technology, let's look at the configuration they are offering. The DG model comes with a T6600 Core2Duo (2.20GHz), 4GB DDR2 RAM (667MHz), 320GB HDD, ATI Mobility 4570 graphics with 512MB dedicated memory, a 15.6" TriDef screen, all this with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit holding it together. The graphics card seems quite beefy but whether it'll handle the 3D is still to be seen.

Bundle

Techtree's the place i come every time i need a review on gadgets and it has helped me buy my mobiles and my old PC but guys u have missed to mention that the - specs(3D) is very uncomfortable if you already wear glasses...Besides the price in the showrooms are 48000 +... Honestly did not feel it deserved 3 1/2 stars...a 3 would be ok. The 3D aint good once you load your own pics and soisn't the video's... the configuration is however good but for 48000?? why not get the no1 rated(on this site) hp dv6 series??? ---cheero!

well this is perfect.. I am sure if a decent desktop has been used, there could be great 3d experience.. the gaming would rock.. But I guess, this takes place in closed environments.. since out side light interference would be
