Sam & Max: Freelance Police
LucasArts have been known for graphic adventure computer games, and Freelance Police was supposed to be the final game in the Sam & Max series. The project was announced in 2002 and was a sequel to the 1993 title Sam & Max Hit the Road featuring Sam - an anthropomorphic dog and Max - a hyperkinetic rabbit thing, who were comic-book characters created by Steve Purcell.
The game used a point-and-click as the previous adventure games, but using a 3D game engine instead of the SCUMM and GrimE engines used in older adventure games of the company. Initially, the game development seemed to be heading smoothly towards completion, but in March 2004, LucasArts suddenly cancelled the game. The reason they gave was worsening economic and market conditions and this was not well-received by fans, the video game media and Steve Purcell.
Many attempts were made to save the series, which included a petition of 32,000 signatures to LucasArts by fans, and there were some attempts to revive the game, but nothing came of it. Some of the former development team members formed Telltale Games and tried to continue the game development, but could not do so because LucasArts held onto the rights to game asset. This was the start of the decline of adventure game genre in general.
