Sporting 1GHz Snapdragon, Skylight has custom Linux interface and 10-inch HD screen
Lenovo has finally announced the 'Smartbook' dubbed as Skylight which is based on Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor. Yes, it's the same mobile computer that was showed by Qualcomm's CEO Paul Jacobs at an analyst meet in November last year. Just after we reported this, German company Smartbook AG contacted us and asked us to resist using the word 'smartbook', which, according to it, is its trademark. Just like the 'Netbook' word battle, we're soon going to see a 'Smartbook' battle between Smartbook AG and Lenovo-Qualcomm.
Lenovo didn't reveal all specifications of Skylight at the official Skylight page. With a 10-inch screen, Lenovo boasts Skylight to be HD device and says it is equipped with Qualcomm's Snapdragon ARM II processor with 20GB Storage on the device while 2GB in the clouds. Snapdragon ARM II processor runs at 1GHz and is packs 3G support, 720p HD graphics and the CPU core on the chipset.
The 10-inch HD screen boasts of 1280x720 pixel resolution. This netbook runs customized Linux user interface which also has the "always on" feature for quicker boot up or shutdown. Skylight's Linux interface is optimized for web gadgets/widgets like Gmail, Facebook, YouTube, etc. Skylight will carry more than 18 preloaded web gadgets such as Amazon MP3 and Roxio CinemaNow to make it a complete mobile multimedia device. This netbook has quadband 3G WCDMA service integrated to be used with AT&T service, albeit only for U.S. based customers.
Weighing less than a kilogram, Skylight has 1.3 megapixel camera built-in, full size keyboard, two USB slots, mini HDMI connector, audio ports, built-in mic, memory card slot and SIM slot. Since 3G is hardly available in India as yet, we aren't sure if users would be able to make best of it even if Lenovo brings it to India.
Lenovo will offer Skylight for $500 (Rs. 24,000 approx.) in U.S., starting April and will release it in Europe as well as China later.
