Remember the CrunchPad? The same Internet tablet that was declared dead by TechCrunch a few weeks ago.

As mentioned back then, the only thing that died was the CrunchPad brand. The product, made by Fusion Garage has gone ahead and showcased the erstwhile CrunchPad with a gaudy new name. Ladies and gentlemen, say hello to the JooJoo. That's right, the JooJoo. While the name may sound like Vodafone's famous ZooZoo strip, this one has nothing to do with it.

The JooJoo, expected to cost around $500 (Rs. 23,297 approx.) when it's finally launched is an Internet tablet that is optimized to do just one thing. Browse the Internet in all its glory. It has a 12.1 inch touchscreen and is capable of displaying "rich multimedia content and streaming HD Video", says Fusion Garage CEO Chandra Rathakrishnan.

He adds hat the JooJoo is capable of booting up in under nine seconds - making it an almost instant on product. Even the fastest phones of today take at least 30 seconds to boot up completely. It has no physical buttons except for an on/off switch and offers support for slide gestures, scrolling, e-books, digital newspapers and music playback.

Now, for the issues. The JooJoo has only one connectivity option - Wi-Fi and if you're on the move and there is no Wi-Fi hotspot in sight, this thing turns into nothing more than excess baggage. Also, at its price, people can easily get a much more capable netbook that can do everything the JooJoo can and more.

As for the CrunchPad controversy, Chandra added that no suit or case has been filed yet by Arrington and that it is Fusion Garage - and not TechCrunch that owns the IP rights for the JooJoo.

Aside from the reviewers product bashing, this product seems to be ahead of its time. Thin, easy to store, no itsy-bitsy screed typical of all the handhelds. If the price pint is right, I could see this as an alternative to lugging around a notebook or netbook.

Sorry - at this price it's just a toy for people with too much money. Sell it for $249 and I'll buy one.
