As this year comes to an end, let's take a look at what most Internet users were searching for this year.

It doesn't come as a surprise that the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, has topped the Internet search in 2009 and has been ruling the mind of the global Internet community this year. The information was stated by Google in its annual Zeitgeist - a study of the fastest-rising Google searches (those that had the greatest surge in the past year) and most popular (those that are consistently searched in large volume, like [weather]). The list of the most searched in 2009 also included new sensation Lady Gaga, Facebook, Spanish social-networking site Tuenti, Twitter and the oh-so-popular swine flu epidemic.

Yahoo's list of Top Ten Searches this year too has Michael Jackson at the top. Yahoo says that the unexpected death of a troubled legend also drew record Web traffic and tributes. The other most searched terms that followed Jackson were The Twilight Saga, WWE, Megan Fox, pop princess Britney Spears, Naruto, popular TV show American Idol, the famous- for-being-famous Kim Kardashian, NASCAR and one of the hottest video games of the year RuneScape.

It's also worth noting who fell off the Top 10 list: In 2008, Barack Obama became the first politician to crack the Top 10 on Yahoo. Despite sliding off, he still commanded plenty of online attention in '09 - enough to warrant his own list.

Tracking the most searched word on Microsoft's new baby, Bing also confirmed that Michael Jackson and related information was searched by billions this year. Jackson was followed by Twitter, Swine Flu, Stock Market, Farrah Fawcett, Patrick Swayze, Cash for Clunkers, Jon and Kate Gosselin, Billy Mays and Jaycee Dugard on the Top Bing Trending Topics for 2009 list.

Looking at the list, it just goes to show how simple minded most of the internet users are. Jon and Kate Gosselin? Who are they and why would anyone be interested in them?
