    Not a premature death though

It was in the beginning of 2009 that the world first heard of TechCrunch's CrunchPad project, aimed at manufacturing a low cost, web tablet. Back then, the idea was welcomed by many who felt that the world could do with a cheap Internet tablet that could just browser websites and do nothing more.

The project was well on its way to launch till Michael Arrington, the man behind the entire project announced in a blog post that the CrunchPad project has "self destructed over greed, jealousy and miscommunication."

Apparently, TechCrunch's partner in making the CrunchPad Fusion Garage had decided on November 20 as the date of the launch. However, just two days before the launch Arrington received an email from Fusion Garage CEO Chandra Rathakrishnan saying that they would be launching the CrunchPad alone - without any TechCrunch connection! TechCrunch equated this with an interesting analogy. Arrington says, "This is the equivalent of Foxconn, who build the iPhone, notifiying Apple a couple of days before launch that they'd be moving ahead and selling the iPhone directly without any involvement from Apple."

A naturally displeased Arrington is now contemplating lawsuits against Rathakrishnan and his share holders as individuals for theft of intellectual property. While we are yet to hear Fusion Garage and their CEO regarding this, looks like the web tablet with the "CrunchPad" logo will never make it to production.
