Opera has surprised every browser maker with the release of its new Opera 10.20 Alpha build that has independent Widgets running support. This means, one can run Opera widgets just like any other program Windows application on PC. Recently, the company had released new Opera 10.10 version of the browser with Opera Unite.

With the new Opera 10.20 Alpha build, several Opera Widgets will get Windows program behavior just like other widgets (gadgets) of Windows 7/Vista. Best part is these widgets, say the Twitter widget for Opera can be used 'without' firing up Opera. However, one needs to install Opera 10.20 Alpha for that feature.

Smartly, Opera has brought Widgets to desktop, thereby giving competition to existing platforms for web-based apps - mainly Adobe AIR. Though both the platforms are different, the purpose these apps serve will be the deciding factor for the user. Eventually, it will depend upon resource usage.

However, it should be noted that the Opera 10.20 is an Alpha build and will have several known and unknown issues. Besides making Widgets independent of Opera, there aren't any new features in the Opera 10.20 Alpha as of now.

Download the Alpha build of Opera 10.20 for Windows, Mac or Linux and install it as separate installation if you wish to just try it out.
