Nvidia had recently mocked Intel with a parody cartoon site and thus added fuel to fire of legal battle over Intel CPU based chipsets. After Nvidia's third-quarter earnings call, Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang was questioned if the company would jump into x86 chip platform development. This indirectly meant if it will compete with Intel and AMD on microprocessors. Huang simply denied any possibilities of Nvidia jumping into CPU market.

Nvidia CEO denied possibilities and warded off the rumors about Nvidia making x86 platform chips. "Nvidia's strategy is very, very clear. I'm very straightforward about it. Right now, more than ever, we have to focus on visual and parallel computing," clarified Huang. Further, Huang pointed out Nvidia's involvement in lowest power platforms like mobile and portable media players - Zune HD.

Intel warned Nvidia to stop claiming their chipsets to be compatible with Nehalem processors. As per Intel, the four-year old agreement between the companies didn't cover Nvidia's access to Intel CPUs with integrated memory controllers. So if Intel wins the suit then Nvidia loses the license to produce Intel Nehalem architecture supporting chipsets.

Dough Freedman, market analyst with Broadpoint American Technology Research, still thought that Nvidia would become supplier of x86 CPUs by necessity, perhaps in next 12 months. Freedman further added that Nvidia has hired ex-employees of Transmeta, who used to supply low-power x86 compatible chips. Doesn't make much sense as why would Nvidia produce CPUs while it's going so well with their graphics business. Even if it is, Nvidia would have to come out with seriously competitive chip to stand strongly against Intel and AMD.

Not to forget, there would be several legal processes that Nvidia might have to squeeze through. Intel might be working on graphics chip dubbed Larrabee but that doesn't mean that GPU would be crammed in the CPU over night. Several technological as well as legal factors need to be considered for that.

Nvidia may or may not come out with x86 chip but Intel surely would launch Larrabee graphics chip sometime next year.
