Dead Space

This runaway hit by what was then called Redwood Shores, caught even its publishers by surprise. Dead Space is a sci-fi survival horror game played from a third person perspective-something that had been done a lot of times before.

What Dead Space did really well was add fresh lick to all the smaller elements of gameplay like the weapon's targeting systems, interaction with the world and most notably the innovative and seamless implementation of HUD. Furthermore, the game was created with surprising attention to details, especially with character animation. So, this is one of those rare games where it does not look like the protagonist is moving around with a permanent wedgie. The enemies in the game are the usual bunch of twisted freaks of nature-what is different about them is the way in which they have to be dispatched by systematic dismembering.

And yes, true to its genre, the game has some scary, high-tension sequences and I know of a few people who were shitting bricks playing this game.

Starcraft

This game should be credited for bringing a whole new level of depth to the RTS genre. There may not be too many who haven't at least tried this game; however for the uninitiated, Starcraft features three distinct warring factions. Each faction has its own campaign, which was further broken down into separate missions.

The Terran are a group of exiled humans vying for power and control in a distant part of our galaxy. One of the other opposing factions is the Protoss, an ancient humanoid race with advanced technology and Psionic abilities. Right in the middle of this conflict are the Zergs-one of the most hated (or loved) creations of sci-fi universe. This race of insectoids, aggressively pursue their goal of assimilating other species. The Zerg race has a reputation of single handedly creating a whole new strategy in its genre called Zerging, where one overwhelms the enemy forces by sheer numbers.

Starcraft II is under development by the big-heads at Blizzard Entertainment and we are hoping to see its release sometime next year.

The Chronicles of Riddick

Even though this is not originally a video game universe, Riddick perhaps has a larger fan following among gamers as compared to movie goers.

The series has two full movies, an animated feature and two video games. It was started with the release of a movie titled Pitch Black, which followed the exploits of one of the most iconic sci-fi anti-hero Richard B. Riddick. Riddick belongs to a curious race of humans called the Furyans and spends most of his time escaping from maximum security prisons or given a chase to bounty hunters.

Riddick's appeal lies in his ultra-cool demeanor and wicked skills on hand-to-hand combat and a near mysterious past. Most of his abilities are innate, almost animalistic-like the ability to see in the dark and his exceptional strength and agility. As they say, you judge a hero by his enemies and Riddick has encountered versatile and interesting bunch of them.

This universe also has some intriguing planets like the unforgiving Crematoria seen in The Chronicles of Riddick and Hades-a planet featured in the movie Pitch Black, that has three Suns, perpetual sunshine and plummets into darkness every 20 years or so.

The first video game adaptation was called Escape from Butcher Bay on the Xbox and is considered by many as the best looking game on the platform. Apart from the visuals, the game has a unique mixture of roleplaying, action, stealth and adventure. Due to its critical and commercial success, Starbreeze Studios went on to release Dark Athena on the current generation of console and PC.
