Tachyon Technologies has announced an extension of its web based language transliteration tool to the mobile platform with the launch of the Quillpad Mobile application.

Quillpad is a well known transliteration tool which facilitates translating English to other languages. It has a fair share of dedicated users as of now. In its web-based avatar, the tool enabled users to type words in English and get the text in the language of their choice. The USP of Quillpad was the fact the users need to adhere to any set of "rules" for the product to work without hiccups. This meant that when you needed a transliteration, all you needed to do was to type whatever you want in English (the phonetics will be in your language) and Quillpad will transliterate the English words into the corresponding word in the language you have selected. The web based version of Quillpad supports transliteration in 10 different Indian languages.

With a large mobile subscriber base in the country, a mobile version of the transliteration tool was a natural progression for the developers. Now, they have come up with an application that does the same thing as the web based application - except that this one allows users to transliterate text messages to Hindi. The developers have promised additional language support in future versions. According to Tachyon, out of the 400 million mobile phone users in the country, less than 100 million are English literate. Even these English literate users, at times, prefer communicating with their friends in their own mother tongue and thus was born the idea of a mobile version of Quillpad.

Quillpad Mobile will be made available in all major Indian languages - Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Gujarati, Marathi, Bengali and Punjabi. The first version only supports Hindi because Hindi speakers form their largest user base. Additionally, most phones of today support Hindi fonts - which unfortunately, is not the case for other languages. However, that has not deterred the developers who have come up with a patent pending rendering technology to support Indian language fonts on handsets that do not come with Indian language fonts bundled. All the users need to have is a basic Java supporting handset for Quillpad Mobile to work.

Consumers can download Quillpad mobile to their phones (via GPRS) or to their computers by logging on to http://www.quillpadmobile.in.They can install the product and try it out free by sending a limited number of messages. After that, in order to continue to use the product, they will need to buy the product license by logging on to the website and making a payment of Rs. 149 using either credit card or debit card or net banking. Users can also send an SMS saying "Quillpad" to 57333 for more information.
