Motorola's upcoming Android handset, the Droid, has been in the news for quite some time now. The phone was known by a couple of names like Sholes, Tao earlier and finally, Droid.

Until now, all we had was mere rumors and speculations about this phone - and of course, some leaked pictures. However, in a latest gaffe', Motorola inadvertently revealed the phone for the world to see when it appeared on its website - a good one week prior to its formal announcement. The entire Droid minisite was available for the world to see - till it was pulled down, but not before eagle eyed bloggers noted it.

So, what was to be announced on October 28 has already been "announced" albeit informally, since we have all the information about the Droid that matters. So, without further ado, let's see what the phone comes packed with.

Note that the phone as of now is only available for Verizon USA users. There is, however, no reason for us to believe that Motorola wouldn't come with a GSM version of this one for global markets soon.

The Specs that matter:

  • CDMA 1X 800/1900, EVDO rev. A connectivity
  • 550 MHz CPU
  • Android 2.0 (Eclair) OS
  • 3.7, WVGA (480 x 854 pixels); 16:9 widescreen touchscreen display
  • 5mpx camera with 4x digital zoom, autofocus, image stabilization, dual LED flash and up to 24 fps; D1 (720 480) resolution video capture
  • Full QWERTY side slide keyboard
  • Accelerometer, aGPS and sGPS support, proximity and ambient light sensors
  • Wi-Fi b/g, Stereo Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR, USB 2.0 high speed with micro USB connector, 3.5 mm headset jack
  • 16 GB microSD pre-installed; supports up to 32 GB microSD expandable
  • Webkit HTML5 support, Flash 10 (available 2010)
  • 1400 mAh Li Ion battery with up to 270 hrs. standby and 385 mins talk time
  • Dimensions: 2.4 x 4.6 x .5 in.; 60.00 x 115.80 x 13.70 mm
  • Weight: 6 oz.; 169 g

Being an Android device, it will of course come with all Google Services being supported natively. Apart from these, there will be an Amazon MP3 store, as well as Facebook, Gmail and Exchange integration into a unified contacts list.

YOUR MP3'S ON YOUR DROID For MP3’s you just pull your Micro SD put it in an adapter, how ever you want to plug it in your PC, after accessing the Micro SD then under the DCIM folder make a folder called Music and copy and paste your MP3’s the Music folder. Then remove the Micro SD from your PC and put the Micro SD back in the Droid and go to Music on the Droid and there you are.

I am wondering, will this let you have multiple IM programs running at the same time sorta like the Blackberry does or will it shut down every time you exit the program?

After seeing the specs, very disappointing, I was expecting a great leap forward instead of phone with similar specs to phones available in europe a year ago. It lacks productivity software, like MS Office, and only 5 megapixel was hoping for at least 8. I hate hype with no comparable phone at best to the iPhone

Comparable? Doesnt the iPhone have a 3 megapixels camera...And they have the same processor as the iPhone but moto uderclocked it at 550mHz while the iPhone is at 600mHz.

Cameras on phones the megapixel amount is not that important because I have known phones with 2mp vs a 3mp camera take much better photos and videos. The iphones 3mp camera takes the best photos and videos i have ever seen on any pda/cell phone device and let me tell you I have been in the cellular business since 1996 and seen them all. I was sceptical with the iphone when it came out but all it takes is to use it for a little while and your sceptism will go away like mine did.. before my iphone i was all about my blackberry and motorola so just be open minded and try the 3gs out.

Way too much hype on this phone, a 16gb pre installed microSD, are you kidding me!? The only device that will ever be an Iphone is the Zii Egg development platform, now those are some serious device specs.

Deciphering the counter on the droid website (if the entire counter is in seconds, that is, and not divided into days/hours/minutes) puts its release date at about December 10th (about 4191200 seconds from this posting on 23 Oct). Feel free to double-check my math I did it fairly quick.

The counter is counting down to publicity event at 10am on Wednesday the 28th of October in NYC. That may also be when it appears on the Verizon Wireless website for pre-orders.

I have an Iphone. AT&T service is OK for me. But this looks like a nice phone for browsing. It also has flash. Apple may begin to loose some market share. Let Verizon take off with this. Moto adds GSM and ATT picks it up. I think I'll probably switch.

I hope it does very well. I might get one. Being a contrarian, I don't have an iPhone, too many people have it, and it costs too much! This competition between the Droid and the iphone will be a good thing for the consumers.
