Performance

The DVP3388 was put through a series of tests to check its performance. The player fared well in both the DVD and Video CD test. However, the DVP3388 failed in a couple of formats in our DivX Test. The player was not able to play QPEL and the first of the XVID encoded video files. On running the same tests via USB, the results were the same with playback. Reading audio and images were pretty fine except for a few instances where the player couldn't read ID3 Tags, but as it's possible to see the entire file name scroll when in focus, it's still manageable. Playback quality of video is decent and so is the up-scaling.

On the audio side of things, the player has a proper 5-channel output. The audio quality is decent. It has audio equalizers built into its firmware to enhance the audio experience. There are also settings provided to adjust each of the speakers in the setup along with 3D Audio enhancements. Overall, the audio is acceptable and so is the video; no real down sides with QEPL and XVID beta.

Price & Verdict

The Philips DVD Player DVP 3388 sells at an MOP of Rs. 4,999 with a one-year warranty. However, the pricing is much higher than the Philips DVP 3368 but the extras that come with the DVP 3388 aren't worth the premium pricing. This player also has trouble with few file formats. That makes it even less worth its current pricing. The option is to find if the older DVP 3266 is available and buy it or else you could go for the LG DV 388, which is another good option, as both these players are available for around 3K.

i have an old plasma TV vith a digital box outside. It is connected by HDMI cable. I can not connect my Philips DVD player using normal 3 colour cables. It only works on HDMI cable, but I have to disconnect my digital box every time. Any advice, please?
