Xperia X2 - last Windows Mobile based Sony Ericsson phone?
Sony Ericsson might have just introduced the Windows Mobile 6.5 laden Xperia X2 amidst much fanfare last week. However, the company seems disillusioned with the platform and is considering pulling the plug on future Windows Mobile devices altogether. According to Eldar Murtazin from the usually very trusty Mobile Review, Sony Ericsson is in no mood to announce yet another Windows Mobile device. A WM device which was in the works has been reportedly cancelled midway. So, looking at the way things are moving, the Xperia X2 might just turn out to the last Windows Mobile powered device you see from Sony Ericsson. This leaves us wondering if Sony Ericsson has taken a hasty decision -- especially with Windows Mobile 7 not too far from release.
The reason being told for pulling the plug on Windows Mobile seems to be the dismal sales forecast the Sony Ericsson sees for the platform in the future. The company has also set its eyes on competing platforms like Symbian Series 60 (which itself is in its last legs) and the flashy Android (Remember Rachael, anyone?). As for Series 60, we are talking about the Satio that would be the first ever Series 60 device from the Sony Ericsson fold. Sony Ericsson is reportedly working on almost four S60 and another four Android based devices for next year. Looks like it would be an year minus Windows Mobile for Sony Ericsson in 2010.
