Samsung recently announced their multimedia powerhouse in India - the Omnia HD. The phone boasts of a brilliant 3.7" AMOLED display and an 8 Megapixel camera with the capability to record videos in 720p resolution, a first for any mobile phone. We managed to get our hands on one sample and today we'll give you our first impressions on this handset. Rest assured you'll find a full review of the phone on Techtree soon enough.


 


 




Hardware


 


This is where the Omnia HD scores all its brownie points. The phone has been armed with a hardware that can put many multimedia phones to shame. With a spec sheet that runs in pages, Omnia HD owners are sure going to have a ball showing off their device.


The first thing that you notice when you hold the device in your hands is just how large the phone is. It almost feels as large as the Sony PSP in hand; you have the massive 3.7" AMOLED display to thank for that. The display is truly stunning with a brilliant picture quality indoors with mesmerizing colors and deep blacks. Outdoors, however, the display loses its sheen, but still remains somewhat readable.


The front side also has the video call camera at the top along with the proximity sensor and the call speaker. Below is the Call and End key with the S60 Menu key straddled in between.



 



On the left side of the phone are the volume control keys and the microSD card slot. Apart from the card slot the phone also comes with 8 or 16 GB of built-in memory. On the right side of the phone is the keypad lock switch at the top, the USB/Charger port and the camera shutter key at the bottom.


On the top side of the phone are the 3.5mm headphone jack and the left stereo speaker, while the right speaker is placed at the bottom of the phone. The speakers take their respective position when the phone is held horizontally while watching a video.
On the rear side is the lens for the 8 Megapixel camera. Surprisingly, there is no lens cover and the flash is also a single LED instead of Xenon (or even a dual LED for that matter).





The build quality of the phone is superb and the phone has a solid feel to it. The phone isn't even that heavy, and combined with the relatively slim design, it is pretty pocketable. However, the phone does attract a lot of fingerprints.


Under the hood the phone runs a 600 MHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor. Apart from that the phone also has a 3D graphics accelerator that will make your videos and 3D games run smooth. There is also a dedicated sound processor. With so much processing power available the Omnia HD promises to be a pretty potent device - on paper at least!

Omnia HD records in 1280 X 720 resolution (720p), not 1280 X 800. Perhaps it may record videos in D1 (720 X 480) without any jerkiness.

Prasad, having used the same phone with a different firmware, I see that the current one has lots of issues. So, half of the issues mentioned here (Wi-Fi, Video Recording mainly) have been induced by the new firmware we installed just before we did this first look. I was in fact surprised you faced issues with the videos - mainly because I had recorded quite few of them prior to the update and they were of acceptable quality. Another thing I noticed is that the browser misbehaving with regular consistency. Hangs for no apparent reason. So, half of the issues WILL be resolved once we have a stable firmware update. Those who're reading this, this first look was done on a firmware we "induced" forcibly. Once we have a stable version, the results would be better.
