Sony finally announced the much rumored PlayStation 3 Slim gaming console at the on-going GamesCom 2009 Expo in Cologne, Germany. Back in May, images of Sony PS3 Slim chasis and retail package were leaked. Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai unveiled new PlayStation 3 Slim model at the GamesCon 2009 Expo.

Sony will offer PS3 Slim in North America and Europe based stores from Sept. 1 for $299 (Rs. 14,400 approx.). The Sony PlayStation 3 Slim CECH-2000A features 120GB HDD and will come with PS3 firmware 3.0 version. Sony said it currently has no plans to bring PS3 Slim in India. Interestingly, PS3News folks dug up some information about another PS3 Slim CECH-2000B model with 250GB HDD from FCC site.

Fat and huge looking Sony PS3 will shed weight and size in new PlayStation 3 Slim version that will pack 120GB storage. Sony has redesigned the internal design architecture of PS3 Slim - from main semiconductors to power supply unit. Hirai, at the launch, said that PS3 Slim is 33 percent smaller and 36 percent lighter than the previous PS3 models.

PS3 Slim has new 45nm process manufactured Cell processor that runs at the same clock speed as the old 60nm processor. Obviously this smaller processor would be more power efficient and power consumption can be brought down by two-thirds which will reduce fan noise. Sony has designed PS3 Slim to be used horizontally (as PS2 is used) unlike the earlier PS3 models. However, Sony offers a $24 (Rs. 1,200 approx.) stand to hold the PS3 Slim vertically.

Sony offers built-in WiFi, two USB ports and has moved the hard drive to front for easier access for replacement without voiding the warranty. The "Install other OS" feature has been removed in the PS3 Slim. We're sure some gaming geeks would love to see if they could install Linux or any other operating system on it now. The new PlayStation logo has been changed to 'PlayStation 3' from 'PLAYSTATION 3', used earlier.

Sony has pulled out backward compatibility from PS3 Slim citing the reason that its research states consumers buy PS3 consoles because of the PS3 games. What if someone wants to enjoy the legacy games on PS3? Again, Sony will indirectly force such gaming enthusiasts to keep their PS2 console and crib about no backward compatibility.

PS3 will also get new firmware 3.00 update that brings a slew of new features like status indicator, custom themes, avataars, redesigned friends list and trophies. Sony also added the BRAVIA Sync feature in PS3 which allows using TV remote to browser through PS3's XMB and the console can be turn off automatically with new "System Standby" feature when BRAVIA TV is shutdown.

Along with that, Sony has also slashed prices of the existing PS3 models by $100 (Rs. 4,800 approx.). So now, the 80GB HDD bearing PS3 will cost $299 (Rs. 14,400 approx.) and the 160GB HDD bearing PS3 will cost $399 (Rs. 19,200 approx.).

The PlayStation 3 80 GB prices for India have been slashed by 20 percent and now the console costs Rs. 19,990. Along with that, Sony India will also offer two Free Games: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and GT5 Prologue.

it will be more exiting if ps3 slim has harddisk console for game being stored like in ps2. ps3 blue ray disc is very expensive. there is risk for the lens being damaged if we play for plenty of hours in daytime this may also increases ps3 reparing cost.i had purchased ps3 for variety which cant be seen in xbox console. q)i is online gaming is possible after modifying ps2?

"Obviously this smaller processor would be more power efficient and power consumption can be brought down by two-thirds which will reduce fan noise." i have the limited edition ps3 160 gb which is virtualy silent when i play it so i dont see what difference this will make. the only way i even know its on is by the light at the front and im not joking, but i do have to say it does make an annoying soung when it sucks up and ejects disks. annother problem is that after i play for a long time one side gets relly hot and so do the disks when you ejct them, but then again, i should see this as a good feature considering it gets quite cold where i live. i think its unfare that in india its not even been released yet but the same thing happend in the uk with the phat ps3 when it came out several months later but that was because of shortages of blu ray diodes of somthing. i appologise for my spelling .

I just wish it had play back abilities. It's the one thing making me question getting it. If it had that, it would be PERFECT!

No backwards compatiblity was the deal breaker for me.

Its down to two things really. 1.The PS2 is still selling well, most multiplatform franchises such as Guitar Hero and FIFA sell best on PS2, with this reannounced in the PS3, it would leave PS2's chances of retaining being the most popular console in the world very slim (no pun intended) 2. Sony never made an official announcement about PS2 playability being removed, so people with the 40GB model in particular are going to realise theyve had harsh value and will feel left out in the cold, however eventually i think some software will be released to make every PS3 PS2 compatible. Needs to be done, especially as the Blu Ray drive is scratch resistant. Sure Sony will get an earful, but at least PS3 slim would reach the potential it deserves.

Sweet! The PS3 is the best. It offers so much for a great price. And I could care less about the backward compatability of PS2 games. I rarely play them, and I am sure that Sony will eventually make the popular titles available via download from the Sony Store. Way to go Sony! One more thing, if XBOX would come out with a slim model, would they still have the gigantic sorry excuse of a power brick?

PS3 slim does not support Linux installation. But this should not be of much concern to people who are interested only in gaming. PS3 'phat' also offers better compatibility with PS2 games. PS3 'phat' 60GB NTSC offers the best compatibility with PS2 games but is no longer manufactured. Luckily I have it. HE HE HE HE
