Fairly powerful to keep an average home user happy
Aesthetically appealing, space saving design, sufficiently powerful hardware for general home and multimedia usage, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Mac OS X Leopard with iLife '09
No front USB ports, no media card reader, wireless remote no longer part of standard bundle, unsuitable for gaming, bit expensive
The cheapest Mac in Apple's line up has arrived at our labs. The Mac Mini received a hardware update this March, wherein the graphics and the processing power along with the memory was upgraded to make it up-to-date with today's demands. We run it through our tests to see whether it is still the best compact computer that you can buy.
You are buying Macs for one thing. The OS. Windows is so poorly designed when juxtaposed to OSX, that it is laughable. You are paying for a better computer. Hardware is often times misleading. We don't need to get technical, but there is a reason why PCs with 2X the specs perform worse than Macs. Trust me, I resisted macs for a long time.
. In the 2nd paragraph you've written "A Windows PC user will scoff at these prices......assemble a far superior PC at this price". You mean a PC with better hardware but your statement implies that the PC is better because of Windows. And it also irritates me when almost every single person including tech enthusiasts blatantly ignore Linux as if Windows is the only option for a PC. Linux on a PC would actually be far superior than Windows on a PC.
Linux doesnt have the same level of games support as Windows. After 2 decades of people using windows, it is fair to say that windows pc is superior to Mac/Linux
as a user of linux (extensive) and being used to Windows and a bit of mac too...frankly there is nothing that is superior about any OS...depends on your requirement...if you want servers you would rely on un1x....if you want more applications/games/media you would use Windows...linux is more a labor of love (as I realize) and you should be proficient (read tech savvy) in managing the odd quirks to utilize it to its fullest potential...
It is also extremely safe environment (Linux). If you use your machine to primarily surf the web, then Linux is a godsend to you.It also has some pretty cool games like open arena, tremulous, flight gear, etc. And besides you can well throw away those pesky device driver cd's .A complete peace of mind for the administrator. It may be not capable for graphics works, but when it comes to engineering or general science ,it really kicks.Apps like scilab,octave,maxima,r,.....the list just goes on and on.You get all these for free, and give it to anyone without running the risk of being branded a pirate. And then again if you want to use windows apps ,you have wine,or vmware,These two can load awfully large number of windows apps.I rest my case.
unsuitable for gaming? mac mini? when did you find gaming happenin on nettops? mac mini is for regular usage only...graphically intensive app requirements would be on macbook pro and the other more powerful alternatives in mac. it is not a con..though iCon is :)
