Next generation architecture update for Google web search engine

Search giant Google is now looking forward to tweak its web search via next-generation architecture. This new project is codenamed Caffeine and resides under the hood of Google s search engine. Project Caffeine isn t something that Google will launch overnight, but it will be a step-wise update for the search engine s infrastructure. Well, Google isn t taking any cues from the recent Microsoft-Yahoo deal on the Bing search engine.

Anyhow, the preview of Google s Caffeine can be viewed here.

With the Caffeine web developer preview, Google has taken its first step towards improving their web search by size, indexing speed, accuracy, comprehensiveness, among other dimensions. Google will integrate this next-generation infrastructure over a period of time, will also consider feedback from web developers and users.

We tried out Caffeine preview and observed that there were little noticeable change in search results, however, the search timing varied along with the number of results.

Staff software engineer Sitaram Iyer,  along with Matt Cutts, principal engineer, and also the head of Webspam team stated in a blog post on the Google Webmaster Central blog, It's the first step in a process that will let us push the envelope on size, indexing speed, accuracy, comprehensiveness and other dimensions. The new infrastructure sits "under the hood" of Google's search engine, which means that most users won't notice a difference in search results. Hence, no cosmetic or user interface changes would be visible at the Caffeine preview page.

Basically Google engineers are re-writing the foundation code of their search engine infrastructure. The Caffeine preview is meant for developers to test search page powered with same Google search engine. This infrastructural change will be the foundation for the future indexing changes that will take place in Google s search engine to speed up website. By speed, the next-generation architecture would be focused on offering real-time search results.

Read more info about Caffeine update in Cutts blogpost here and also check out his video interview with Mike McDonald for WebProNews.

Google s Caffeine project is likely to be teased after Microsoft Bing s arrival. However constant improvement has always been a trait of Google.

Didn't really notice a difference in speed or accuracy. Maybe Google's got more tweaking to do; however, I must say that I'm pretty satisfied with Google now. This kind of reminds me of the saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" LOL.
