Taking a break from Sci-Fi series from abroad, we shall take a look at a couple of Sci-Fi TV serials produced here in India that enjoyed popularity during their time of airing.

Captain Vyom

India also tried its hands at producing Sci-Fi serials and with a good measure of success. Captain Vyom was one such serial with Milind Soman starring as the protagonist title character along with Tom Alter. Set in the futuristic setting of 2220 A.D. when mankind has conquered the solar system and is looking to capture new frontiers, the world is ruled by a government whose headquarter is based in Delhi. The prison in this era is based on Io, which is a moon of Jupiter and contains the worst criminals. When a meteor strikes Io, the criminals are set loose and Captain Vyom (who is the captain of his spaceship ULKA and its crew) is assigned the task of securing them back. The series enjoyed a fair amount of fan following back in the mid nineties when it aired 54 episodes on DD National.

Indradhanush

Telecast in 1988-1989, this sci-fi series came at a time when computers were new in India and PCs were virtually non-existent. The plot has a bunch of school kids assembling a computer in a storage room. What happens next is complete fantasy as a Prince from Andromeda galaxy is somehow able to communicate with the kids. The lead character suddenly gets kidnapped by someone from another galaxy, who is the enemy of the Prince.

The Prince then gives the kids a device, using which they can time-travel and rescue their friend. They travel to the past, during the time of Indian independence struggle and then to the future to 2035. One of the characters of the series was Karan Johar, who went on to become a leading film director. This television series is long lost and forgotten, so we have not been able to obtain any screenshots of it.

We would surely have wanted to mention about the series Space City: Sigma, but we have not been able to obtain enough information about it. All that we can say that it was also a tremendously popular TV series during its time and was probably India's modest answer to Star Trek. The series is based on the adventures and exploits of a space ship named Sigma which has Captain Taara, his lieutenant Shakti (played by Shakti Singh), who is half human and half robot, and his equally intriguing crew along with Earth Command (played by Lalit Parimoo).

dreaming of the childhood, maah god......where are those days, look at the generation of today, such a shame they like to watch pokemon - such a damn idiotic serial. we were so impressed by the serial that we actually looked everywhere for the killer orbs shown in sigma, they left such a fear on our minds. really fantastic article. how old are u jayesh?? i thought you are some 20-25 years. its nice to see that some person still remembers those days.

Captain Vyom was an EXCELLENT series. It came out what now 8 odd years before? Wayy ahead considering it was an Indian Serial. It was really really nice. Milind Soman rocked in it big time. They should re-launch it now! Or maybe start selling DVD's off the old episodes. That would be great! Really amused to see this on TT but its good none-the-less. I got flashbacks of my school now! Wayy to go TT! :-)
