Science fiction or Sci-Fi is probably one of the most successful genres when it comes to television serials or movies. While there is a plethora of Sci-Fi television serials being telecast these days on satellite TV, there were a few notable ones when Doordarshan was the only channel (along with DD 2) available before the advent of satellite television. We shall take you down memory lane to list a few of the most notable Sci-Fi television serials that made an impact and left an indelible mark on our minds.

Fireball XL5

Fireball XL5 was probably the first TV series on Indian television in the early eighties, which caught the fancy of most starry-eyed kids. This space-themed TV series is based around the rocket XL5 and its crew consisting of Steve Zodiac (the charismatic blond pilot), Venus (the medical officer and Steve's love interest), Professor Matthew Matic (the bespectacled scientific officer), Robert

The Robot and strange but ever-enthusiastic and funny pet named Zoonie The Lazoon. Each episode was a new adventure and it was almost as good as Star Trek, well - almost. The cast had no humans, but was entirely puppets, including the robot - collectively known as the Supermarionation Marionettes. It was produced by a husband-wife team of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson in 1962 in England.

Johnny Sokko and his Flying Robot

Well, as you may be aware, the Japanese have always been crazy about huge creatures, so a TV series featuring one shouldn't be surprising. Yet another series of the late eighties, Johnny Sokko and the Flying Robot (Tokusatsu in Japanese) was dubbed from Japanese to English. The series featured a huge robot whose head looked similar to that of the Sphinx, and a kid called Johnny Sokko, who accidentally gets permanent voice control of the Flying Robot (generally called the Giant Robot in the series).

Johnny can command the Giant Robot through a miniature transmitter in his wrist watch by issuing voice commands as his voice was the first the robot heard when he got activated. The Giant Robot can fly and fire a variety of munitions. He is therefore made a member of the top secret peacekeeping organization Unicorn. Together they fight evil villains and extraterrestrial Gargoyle gang and save the earth.

dreaming of the childhood, maah god......where are those days, look at the generation of today, such a shame they like to watch pokemon - such a damn idiotic serial. we were so impressed by the serial that we actually looked everywhere for the killer orbs shown in sigma, they left such a fear on our minds. really fantastic article. how old are u jayesh?? i thought you are some 20-25 years. its nice to see that some person still remembers those days.

Captain Vyom was an EXCELLENT series. It came out what now 8 odd years before? Wayy ahead considering it was an Indian Serial. It was really really nice. Milind Soman rocked in it big time. They should re-launch it now! Or maybe start selling DVD's off the old episodes. That would be great! Really amused to see this on TT but its good none-the-less. I got flashbacks of my school now! Wayy to go TT! :-)
