After proposing browser ballot for European users on upcoming OS Windows 7, Microsoft has surely earned some brownie points. Microsoft has gone beyond Windows 7 and its proposal of including browser ballot screen also includes Windows XP and Vista operating systems. The browser ballot process will last for five years from the date proposal is accepted by European Commission.

Microsoft, in its proposed commitment, has made a generous proposal to offer a browser ballot to Windows XP and Vista as well, apart from Windows 7. The browser ballot screen will have a list of browsers including IE along. Microsoft advocates that the screen will include about 10 or fewer of "the most widely-used web browsers that run on Windows with a usage share of equal to or more than 0.5 percent in the EEA (European Economic Area)". This ballot screen will be pushed to current Windows XP and Vista users via Windows update.

As per Microsoft, the users who choose IE as their default browser would be allowed to choose another different browser via ballot screen. The ballot screen will have two links of which one install link will connect the system to a "vendor-management distribution server" for installing the browser. The other link will redirect the user to page with more information on respective browser.

However, Windows XP and Vista users will get the ballot screen via Windows update only after six months after European Commission passes judgment on Opera Antitrust case.

Now, all rests on European Commission to accept Microsoft's proposal or to suggest further modification in it. It's obvious that Microsoft will choose to accept the demands of European Commission than paying billion dollar fines.

Generous? Not quite. The proposal is neither new or from Microsoft. It originated from the competing browser companies that the EC has been working to devise a remedy. Microsoft decided to 'propose' it as a ploy to retain some control of the implementation rather have a solution imposed upon them.
