Picture this. You are looking to purchase a new phone after quite some time. You (quite naturally) end up at a nearby showroom. Let's also assume that you had a clear image in your mind as to what features you were looking forward to. Once you enter the shop, the salesperson sprays a bunch of model numbers at you - all separated by a single digit, that too from amongst various brands. At the end of this, you leave the shop- more confused than ever because you don't know how to differentiate between an S5200 and an S3310, or between a 6300, 6303 or a 6212 Classic. Sounds familiar?
We are pretty sure that even the most seasoned users might face occasional hiccups in figuring out a phone especially from Nokia, which has a huge array of phones, in various form factors and across various price segments and categories. Same is the case with Samsung and Sony Ericsson. All the while, no one seemed to be bothered to make life easier for people looking for the "correct" phone. However, we have reports of Nokia apparently making an attempt to simplify things for the buyer by revamping its naming scheme. It is reportedly readying itself to announce a new naming scheme at the upcoming Nokia World Conference. This is along with the new X, C and S Series devices that will be announced by the company at the event.
What we now know is that every phone from the company would be included in one of the many series and each series would have a set of mandatory features. For example, all E Series would sport a decent messaging client, wi-fi and other important business functionalities that a business user would not want to miss. As for the intra-series naming scheme, the larger the first digit of the series, the higher end the model is. Now, we guess Nokia already has a similar scheme. In any case, we might as well play the waiting and watching game till Nokia actually announces how it plans to go about making things simpler for us mortals.
