Yahoo, the world's most popular web portal, is readying itself for yet another makeover. The change in the homepage, said to be the "most radical" ever since Yahoo's birth during the dotcom boom in the mid-nineties, is expected to go "live" in a phased manner across Yahoo sub-sites.

The new page will be made live after being over a year "in testing". The last time, Yahoo got a remake was almost three years ago in 2006 when the then new Yahoo page with rounded icons went live. The now "old" look has been facing issues with the advent of newer web rivals in the form of Facebook and Twitter who seem to be more "cooler" than old school Yahoo.

The new home page will be more customizable than the current one with the user now being able to add "apps" to a list of "My Favorites" option. The apps may include Flickr, Facebook, Twitter or any other widgets you choose. According to Yahoo AVP Tapan Bhat, the idea is to make Yahoo the "center" for people's online lives.

It is unsure as to why Yahoo has proceeded with the launch of the new interface even though testing had showed that the new interface would result in lesser "user engagement". In short, with the new UI, people tend to spend lesser time on the site. The changes in the search page will also be soon extended to the search page starting next month.

The main change in Yahoo's newest design is the plethora of customizable options the user has now at his disposal. Apart from the existing apps, the user can simple create a new app of his own by simple searching for the site. The app will be the "generated" by Yahoo for them. The new version is expected to go live in the next few days.
