With the iPhone OS 3.0 update, many new features and applications will slowly be made accessible to the users. For now, Google has brought My Location feature to the Google search homepage for iPhone owners based in U.S. and the UK only. Google will soon bring Multi-lingual and multinational My Location support.
While using the mobile Safari web browser on iPhone, My Location hyper link shows up on the iPhone OS 3.0 update based devices.
When iPhone and iPod Touch owners, with iPhone OS 3.0 software update on their devices, visit Google.com through mobile Safari, a text below search box appears - New! Try My Location to find restaurants, shops and bars near you! On clicking on the My Location hyper link, Safari will show up a pop-up asking if you wish to allow Safari to use your current location.
On allowing Safari to use your location, a blue dot will show up below the search box along with your current location. Users can also turn off this option from preferences. My Location service was launched back in 2007 as part of Google Maps feature.
With this feature you can search for restaurants, chemist shops, bus stops close to your location instead of searching them by Zip codes.
In June, the iPhone OS 3.0 update was claimed to bring geo location support in mobile Safari browser. Prior to that, in February, Google launched Google Latitude, the location broadcasting service for mobile and desktop platforms. However, the same service wasn't available to the iPhone owners and was said to be 'under works'.
We now have My Location but are yet to get Google Latitude for iPhone OS based devices. Patience is the virtue for it.
