Will enable developers to reach out to over 30 million WinMo devices
In an announcement that could boost the fortunes of the Windows Marketplace, Microsoft has said that the upcoming service will work on devices running older Windows Mobile versions, including Windows Mobile 6.0 and 6.1. Originally, the plan was to only include Windows Mobile 6.5 based devices. This would have seriously curtailed the "reach" of the marketplace. With this announcement, the Windows Marketplace will enable developers to reach out to over 30 million Windows Mobile devices.
Microsoft has confirmed the announcement in a blog post by a senior official from its Mobile platforms division. Another important piece of information for developers is that the Windows Marketplace is all set to open for developer submissions on July 27. For consumers, the store will open by the time Windows Mobile 6.5 comes later this year. The store is earmarked to be operational in 29 countries. The marketplace will then open up to older operating system versions by year end.
