Update: There are reports coming in of Nokia denying reports of it launching an Android device. We will take this with a pinch of salt and wait till the Nokia World in September anyway!

The latest rumor circulating the interweb is the possibility of Nokia using the Android OS in one of its upcoming phones. The new phone is expected to be announced at the upcoming Nokia World conference scheduled in September this year.

Various industry sources claim that this phone is in an advanced stage of development right now. In any case, a move towards adopting the Android platform by Nokia would be a radical departure from the company's earlier position where it almost exclusively used Symbian based OS'es for its phones -- except of course for the Maemo platform used on their Internet tablets.

The shift towards Android might also be seen as a measure to stop the market share-losing streak the company was on for the past few months. With better, crisper smartphone OS'es right behind its back, it was time Nokia put away its dependence on Symbian, which is now a separate foundation.

Incidentally, Symbian is also developing its own open source OS scheduled to hit devices in 2010. Nokia has been associated with Symbian right from the very beginning and both the entities complemented each other so well that Symbian became the most widely used Smartphone OS of all times -a trend that continues till this day. It is this very dominance that is under threat now and it seems Nokia is willing to go looking for greener pastures to remain competitive. This however does not mean Nokia would be "ditching" Symbian. It is highly likely that a large percentage of phones based on the new Symbian platform will be from Nokia.

In any case this is just a rumor as of now, probably stemmed from Nokia's recent partnership with Intel. Moreover, it was not long ago that we saw reports of Nokia entering the laptop arena with Android powered netbooks. We will eventually get to know by September if Nokia has any such plans up its sleeves.
