American giants HP and Dell have dominated the PC manufacturing segment for a long time. But that, however, is set to change very soon if we are to believe a recent New York Times story.

The report talks about a rising giant from the Far East. Acer, according to analysts, has taken the PC segment by storm and now rivals the big guns in terms of sales.

At the way it is going, the company will knock off the current world number two, Dell off its pedestal. That would make it the first non-American company to do so, if it ever happens. Acer has been able to pull of this virtual stunner, thanks to a set of marketing and business decisions back in the early 2000. These included strengthening its retail base and of late, jumping on the netbook bandwagon. In fact, in spite of having entered the Netbook segment slightly behind Asus, Acer today has the Acer Aspire One, which happens to be the best selling netbook in the world today.

In the past year, Acer has managed to increase its market share by a whole three percentage points giving it a 10% market share. Dell on the other hand gained just 0.1% and now stands at 10%. The trend continues as Acer has in the first quarter of 2009, gained 11.6% of the market, while Dell has dropped down to 13.6%. If this trend continues, it might just be a couple of quarters to go when we will witness a virtual upset in the highly competitive PC manufacturing segment.
