After the CPU, RAM and the GPU, the component most likely to affect system performance is the hard drive. It is on the hard drive where the operating system is installed and boots. It is here where all the applications and games are installed as well. Naturally, a faster hard drive certainly has a remarkable effect on the way and the speed at which your computer performs. After the CPU and the GPU, if there is any other hardware field where innovations are taking place, it has to be the field of data storage.

The latest technology in this field is known as the Solid State Disk or simply SSD. In a layman's language, an SSD is very similar to having RAM with an interface of a hard drive. It therefore does not contain any moving parts such as those found in a traditional hard drive (spinning platters, head, etc) and is therefore more robust, silent and energy efficient.
