Google Suggest gets attacked for providing lewd content
China has always been in news for Internet censorship and recently was in limelight for using porn sites blocking software called Green Dam-Youth Escort. As per Xinhua, Chinese officials blocked Chinese-language search results from Google but the English-language based results are unaffected.
National Office for Internet Pornography crackdown had summoned Google China's executive in charge to block and disable Google search suggestion to block any type of lewd content appearing in search results.
Google China removed the search keyword suggestions that offered lewd content to appear in the search results. A separate Chinese entity, China Internet Illegal Information Reporting Center, stated that Google China had violated national regulations by providing links to pornography and vulgar content despite warnings in January and April.
More than 5000 websites providing lewd content or offering links to such content are blocked and under an investigation scanner. As reported by The New York Times, Google said, "We have been continually working to deal with pornographic content, and material that is harmful to children, on the Web in China."
Google China and Baidu are the two big as well as popular search engines used in the country. However, there are no attacks on Baidu showing comparative suggestion search function. The Chinese government is going rampant over the 'Green Dam' censorship program but might trip and fall by attacking specific functions instead of coming out with solutions to block the objectionable content.
