Starting today Facebook is again attempting to keep up with the world (Twitter).

The popular social networking site is letting some of its users test its newest 'search' proposition that will allow users to search their News Feed for the most recent status updates, photos, links, videos and notes being shared by friends and the Facebook Pages of which they're a fan.

Users will also be able to search for status updates, posted links and notes in Search from people who have chosen to make their profile and content available to everyone.

As the trend is, Facebook will let users control what content they want to share by editing their privacy settings.

Facebook intends to use the tests to understand whether there needs to be improvements in the new search offering.

As always, this Facebook move has generated a mixed reaction from its users. Here are some of them that represent the extreme views at the Facebook blog post so far:

The Positives

Brian:
Loves the peeps who whinge that Facebook is making changes. If it were up to these people we'd all be on dial up, digital TV wouldn't exist and VHS would still be the main format.

Ian: Makes absolute sense - for consumers to tap into their networks and page subscriptions. It's bringing Feedreader search tools to the masses

The Negatives:

Arpen: so basically.. it's gonna have features that have made Twitter succesful

Bruce:
Getting information faster isn't the problem. Isn't the real problem too much information, and too much with the signal each person wants? So making info faster might not be the best solution. Especially when changing your user interface so often confuses people.

Robert: can u stop with new versions...every new version is more sux....

Whether you like it or not, it seems that this new feature is here to stay. The most interesting part is that in spite of all the hue and cry, the same people continue to use Facebook to tag pictures and poke friends.
