The store will add around 5,000 e-books from Simon & Schuster
Scribd, a popular document-sharing website, has roped in Simon & Schuster - publisher of famous authors like Stephen King and books like Angels and Demons - to sell books on its online store.
The store, which began its beta run last month, will add around 5,000 e-books from Simon & Schuster's. The publisher will also make available excerpts from thousands of books for viewing and link it to their website from where you can buy the paperback editions.
Simon & Schuster has gone the online way in order to kill piracy; they say that Scribd has worked hard to improve its anti-piracy measures and that having the authorized editions in its database will make it easier to track illegal versions.
And then, there are skeptics like Carolyn Pittis, senior VP at HarperCollins, who believes that piracy is still a concern and goes on to say, "Theoretically, it sounds great that technology can, in real time, alert Scribd about a pirated copy and prevent someone from actually uploading it. But I don't know how sophisticated that system is and whether it can work on a large scale."
With e-books gaining popularity, we see this deal as a win-win situation for both the publishers and readers - publishers get to protect their content from piracy and online community gets books at discounted for their e-readers at discounted price.
