We've all seen the Phenom II X4 955 in action when we reviewed the Dragon platform, and now it's time to overclock it and push it even further.
The Phenom X4 940 was the flagship processor just a couple of months back but it lacked AM3 support. Therefore it was a natural progression for AMD to launch a replacement, which is exactly what we have today.
From the specifications we see the new X4 955 processor has a slightly bumped up core speed of 3.2GHz and AM3 support the rest remains exactly the same. Thanks to AMD's Phenom II architecture, you can enjoy this CPU on your current existing AM2+ motherboards as well; so DDR3 memory and a board is not a mandate. Since we've already covered the new architecture in detail in our previous review you can read about it here and here.
For today's tests we'll compare it directly with the Phenom II X4 940 as well as a couple of Intel processors. We don't have any of the newer Intel quads like the Q8200, so will have to make-do with what we have.
