Users to get username bearing Facebook Profiles customization option soon

Facebook has announced custom username bearing URLs on first-come-first-served basis for its users June 13 onwards.

Facebook has been actively working on the way users access their respective account. Last month, Facebook announced to use OpenID as single sign option for the users which got mixed reaction from the users as well as the blogosphere.

Blaise DiPersia, designer at Facebook, posted at the official Facebook Blog saying that usernames in Facebook Profile URLs are being offered so that it's easier for people to connect with people, finding common friends, and even get listed in the search engine. Of course, users will have access to search privacy settings that can be used to eliminate the possibility of the username bearing Facebook profile being listed in a search engine.

Users need to visit - http://www.facebook.com/username to get usernames for their Facebook Profile link; so instead of "id=987654321" like random numbers in the profile page link it will show as, for instance, for Techtree the link could be - http://www.facebook.com/Techtree.

This will help users and their contacts to remember respective profile pages easily.

Custom user names should be longer than five alphanumeric characters (A-Z, 0-9) or a period (. - a dot), But there's a catch in using the custom user name - Once modified, the URL name cannot be changed or transferred. Facebook defends this catch as the steps 'taken to prevent abuse or "squatting" on names'. Also to prevent misuse of company trademarks to be registered as user names, Facebook provides "Preventing the Registration of a Username" page accessible here.

With this, Facebook takes one step closer to give their users an addressable identity and also boost Facebook's listing in the search engines. Custom Username for Facebook profile registration is going to be hectic and just like when any new online service is launched. The lucky ones get to register their user names while others with same name have to modify and twist it. Also finding friends in Facebook isn't that difficult with the built-in Friend Finder and email based search. Let's wait to see what Facebook user community has to say about this.
