Claims Safair is 50 percent faster in 64-bit systems
At the on going Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2009 conference at San Francisco, Apple has released the next version of its web browser - Safari 4 for Mac and Windows users. Back in February, Apple had released Safari with an exhaustive list of 150 new features and we took a quick look at the beta to give our verdict.
Safari 4 comes in at the right time just following the launch of Opera 10 Beta and Google Chrome 2.0. Now Microsoft's Internet Explorer 8, that fails Acid 3 tests, is already here and Mozilla's Firefox 3.5 RC is expected soon.
Nitro JavaScript engine has been given the chief credit for boosting Safari 4's browsing speed and getting it 100/100 in Acid3 Tests. The webkit based Safari 4 now has "crash resistance" feature that enables Google Chrome-like threaded processes. So, if one tab crashes other tabs continue to work normally.
Phil Schiller, senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing for Apple, said that Safari works 50 percent faster in 64-bit. Snow Leopard will ship with 64-bit version of Safari. Other features like Top Sites view, HTML5 support, Full History Search, Suggestive web addresses, Bookmarks CoverFlow, et al remains same.
However, there are cosmetic changes here and there on the browser like the tabs have gone back below the address bar.
Safari 4 is available to download for Windows (47MB), Mac OS X Tiger (29MB) and Mac OS X Leopard (43MB) Systems from here. Read about the security updates incorporated in the Safari 4 here. Follow Techtree on Twitter
